California native Todd Rogers is one half of the 2008 Olympic gold medal-winning duo in beach volleyball, along with his partner-in-sand, Phil Dalhausser.
The two will be in town this weekend as part of Red Bull Spiked, a tournament that will convert the House of Blues parking lot into a beach volleyball court. Regional teams of four will play each other for the right to take on the Olympic duo.
Rogers, 34, took a moment to answer some Very Important Questions about volleyball via e-mail.
Q: Where is your gold medal right now?
Rogers: Usually sits in either a cupboard at home, the glove compartment of my car or I have it with me for media, etc. Currently, it is with me in Mason, Ohio, at the AVP event. We brought the medals along for a Special Olympics event.
Q: How do you feel about playing volleyball on a parking lot-turned-sand court?
Rogers: We do it all the time on the AVP and FIVB tours, so it's not unusual. I would say I am a fan of a real beach, though.
Q: Finish this sentence: If I weren't a volleyball player, I'd be a _____.
Rogers: Surfer or coach.
Q: What's the worst place you've found sand on yourself after a match?
Rogers: Deep in ... use your imagination.
Q: Please review the 'Top Gun' beach volleyball scene for us. How do you think Maverick and Goose would fare against you?
Rogers: They would spank us in the movie. I actually know the guy who was the double for Tom Cruise. Guy named Mike Snyder, who I used to play against when I was in high school. Random fact there.
Q: Does it motivate you to crank up the Kenny Loggins jams when you play?
Rogers: Highway to the danger zone ...
Q: Tell the truth – did you cry when Tom Hanks lost his volleyball buddy Wilson in 'Cast Away'?
Rogers: NO! Maybe if it had been a Mikasa ball.
Q: What is your pregame routine? How do you get amped up for the match?
Rogers: Phil listens to Kenny Loggins. I just listen to what they are playing. Random fact again – Kenny Loggins lives in Santa Barbara, and I used to coach his kid. Kid was like 6-6.
