Two common threads among many luxurious nightclubs in Dallas: They don't have happy hour specials and they don't look quite so awesome in the daylight.
Some of these venues just aren't as fabulous without the pretty people hanging around, and some are hiding lame secrets (I actually saw a Pier One on-sale tag on a votive once at a local club). No wonder these upscale spots don't have happy hour. They turn into pumpkins during the day.
The brand-new club Deux – located behind Trinity Hall at Mockingbird Station – appears to have broken that mold. Sure, there are still fancy cars waiting in the valet line. And yes, there's a list at the door (so call ahead). But they aren't so proud that they can't have happy hour on Fridays.
They also have amenities that you don't often find. There is an actual coat check by the powder rooms, along with a concierge and a VIP services manager, all ready to serve.
Deux's official grand opening is Nov. 13, but here's a sneak peek of what I saw on a preview night. The scene: Waterfalls built into the walls and genuine marble bars bring Vegas grandiosity to mind. It's classy and over the top, but comfy with its over-stuffed couches, chairs and pillows.
The vibe: Very flirty. That could have something to do with the cocktail waitresses' dresses, which were low-cut on top and high-cut on bottom. It could be the groups of single guys eyeballing the groups of unattached ladies. Either way, it's a place to go on the prowl.
The music: When I dropped in, DJ Flip was on the decks, mixing Top 40 and hip-hop. (A resident DJ has yet to be determined.)
What people are wearing: You'll want to bring out your finest party wear. Ladies, go with a short-and-sassy dress and sexy heels, or the season's thigh-high boots. Guys, do an embellished button-down and your hottest jeans (not the ones on the floor or fresh out of the hamper).
The smoke factor: There's a small smoking porch, with space heaters for cooler weather.
The drink: The drink menu will be released at the grand opening.
Parking: There's a free parking garage for Mockingbird Station. What a concept! If that isn't your thing, there's also a valet stand.
Seen and heard: I visited Deux for the first time on the day before Halloween, and I saw a below-average-height man dressed in a jockey uniform, but carrying a golf club. I also saw baseball great Manny Ramirez (the real guy, dreads and all).
The bottom line: This place has a serious "wow" factor and is a must-see, even if just once.
