In the fickle nightlife scene in Dallas, it's not unusual for a club or lounge to go belly-up as soon as the once-rabid crowds move on. So it's refreshing to know that Sunset Lounge has been a spot for low-key lounging for almost four years.
Its easygoing vibe probably has a lot to do with that. The sunset-hued nightclub may look like an ultralounge, but has the friendly feel of a dive bar. The wood-paneled patio is an especially appealing corner to sit, watch and listen to the DJ spin some magic.
In the past year, Sunset has kept fresh by updating its look and its schedule. The patio recently got its own separate bar and installed window-like panels that let in fresh air. And just several weeks ago, the lounge created "Sundays Are Fundays," chock full of food and drink specials.
The scene: Sunset is a surprisingly beautiful space, considering the nondescript exterior. Blink and you'll almost miss the big blank building, right under a highway overpass, but the bright-orange logo on the side facing Ross Avenue tells you you're there. Inside, the colors of sundown saturate the room and kind of make the night feel bright. Benches and tables around the perimeter of the room accommodate VIPs, but those not ordering bottle service can hold court there, too. There's not really a dance floor, so partiers just dance where they are, with most gathered near the bar. On the patio, with its wooden blind-like walls that offer a peek of the street, there's plenty more seating.
The vibe: Fun and clubby, without the attitude or the "scene." With so many cozy nooks to huddle in, Sunset is actually a great place to bring your sweetie. But if you're looking to chat up your friends, you can take up a perch on the patio and have little problem hearing your pals, or making yourself heard.
The music: DJ Koi spins electro-house on Thursday and Sunday, and DJ Tek-neek gets things popping with hip-hop on Friday and Saturday.
What people are wearing: Graphic tees and designer jeans seem to suit most guys, while ladies overwhelmingly stick to jeans and heels. There are a few little black dresses in the mix, too.
Smoke factor: Smoking is OK on the patio.
The drink: Cherry limeade. This ain't no fast-food version of the drink – cherry vodka is mixed with lime juice, Sprite and grenadine for a fruity and potent punch.
The food: Sunset has a small menu of Italian eats such as bruschetta and paninis, but the favorite here seems to be the flatbread pizza. On Sundays, the $7.95 snacks are half-off, which made the delicious three-cheese flatbread a friend ordered that night seem even tastier.
Parking: There's not much of anything else nearby, so Sunset's valet is pretty much your only choice Fridays and Saturdays. On Thursdays and Sundays, parking in the lounge's spacious lot is free.
