You don't hear much live music anymore as you stroll down McKinney Avenue, thanks to a noise ordinance prohibiting outdoor performances after 9:30 p.m.
But you can still take in a live show at Liar's Den, which has been open since December. Manager James Hoffman says the club wants to keep live music alive in the area. There's a stage inside, so no worries about rockin' past the noise curfew. They give bands a place to play in Uptown, and welcome musicians looking to jam on open-mic night.
Liar's Den also has gourmet creations (the salmon BLT is a popular choice) and 19 TVs to watch several sporting events at once. The scene: It's like mixing a neighborhood bar, a classy restaurant, some arcade games and a stage. Stand at the bar, relax in the restaurant-style booths, check out the stage or head to the roof, where there's a patio and bar.
The vibe: Lots of singles, mostly in their 20s and early 30s. Lots of flirting. If you're already hooked up, the second-story patio is a great date spot, with a view of the skyline and strings of twinkling blue lights.
The music: On Tuesdays, there's karaoke. Thursdays are open-mic nights, featuring an acoustic guitar player and a drummer – any musician or singer can sign up to join in. Fridays and Saturdays feature acoustic and rock bands.
What people are wearing: Some happy-hour revelers stick around for the late-night crowd, so expect to see a few in work attire. As for everyone else, it's jeans and T-shirts. Girls, I did see a lot of fancy heels, so be aware.
The smoke factor: Smoking is allowed on all patios.
The drink: Beer. They have $15 domestic buckets and $20 import buckets every night. When I stopped in, they had a $3 special on Tecate cans, which they ran out of by 11 p.m.
Parking: Valet is available. There's plenty of parking down Boll Street. Watch for areas that have a two-hour time limit, though.
Seen/heard: At a recent open-mic night, I saw a girl pull down her low-cut tank top to show a group of guys her bra color, and a dude lift up his shirt to show off his abs. And a guy attempting to breakdance while wearing Teva sandals. I could keep going.
