If you have any question as to who is on the turntables at Green Elephant's monthly Dub Assembly party, it will surely be answered when the bass kicks in. Mundo is known for the kind of booming bass lines that make your rum and coke do the Pee-Wee Herman dance right off the edge of the table.
With his dub night going strong into its third year and word of an upcoming full-length record, we thought it'd be a good time to talk shop with Mundo over e-mail. Q: What is it about U.K.-based styles – 2-step garage, dubstep, drum and bass – that really drew you in?
Mundo: The completely raw beats and the sub-bass focus really drew me in. This sub-bass culture is hard to describe but has been written about by several journalists and referred to as the hardcore continuum. It refers to the evolving bass culture that started with hardcore breakbeat and continued with jungle, drum and bass, U.K. garage, dubstep. My style has followed that razor edge.
Q: Is there a touch of Texas in the way you approach these styles?
Mundo: I have tried to add a touch of Dallas and Texas to the beats. ... I've also tried to add my U.K. garage influences with the bumpy stepping beats and pulsing bass, as well as some early techno vibes and even some reggae flavor from time to time. A lot of spices are available in the kitchen.
Q: Dub Assembly is in its third year and doing quite well. How would you describe the party, for those who haven't yet been through the doors?
Mundo: Dub Assembly is a monthly dubstep showcase drawing around 200 people. Energetic sub-bass-heavy dubstep grooves pushed forward by an energetic cheering crowd of loyal supporters. The bass line is the melody and not counterpoint to it.
Q: What do you have in store for the next edition on Sept. 19?
Mundo: This is the first Dub Assembly since our three-year anniversary show. This show will feature Ultrablack from Phoenix, myself, Royal Highnuss, and Passenja. Look for plenty of cutting-edge exclusive songs from all the DJs on the lineup. Come early. Be loud. And be passionate.
Q: I've heard talk of a Jason Mundo full-length album in the works...
Mundo: I am excited about this project. I feel I am in a great groove right now with a lot of ideas, a newly redesigned studio and a lot of spices in the kitchen. Look for it at the beginning of the new year, if not by the end of the year.
