Q&A with Warped Tour highlight Saosin

01:53 PM CDT on Thursday, July 2, 2009

By Rob Clark

Orange County rock crew Saosin is one of the main attractions at Vans Warped Tour, which is celebrating its 15th year of summer mayhem. The tour rolls through Superpages.com Center on Sunday.

Saosin (pronounced "say-o-sin") consists of singer Cove Reber, bassist Chris Sorenson, drummer Alex Rodriguez and guitarists Beau Burchell and Justin Shekoski. The band -- vets of Warped and the Projekt Revolution Tour -- is best known for its 2006 self-titled album, and its breakout hit "Voices." A long-awaited follow-up disc is set for release in September.

We checked in with Sorenson via e-mail, and he shared his thoughts on the new album, the Warped experience and some insight on his roommate, whom local baseball fans should know well.

Q: First off, what's the update on the new album? How's it coming along, and how anxious are you to get it in fans' hands?

Sorenson: It's finally done. It was like the equivalent of sailing around the world on a log raft, or so it seemed. We're really stoked to see what people think. We just kind of did our thing on this, and really hope people are into what we have to offer.

Q: How often do you hear Saosin mispronounced?

Sorenson: It's consistently mispronounced, but rightfully so. It's not even an English word.

Q: When that happens, do you ever just say, "Yes, that's how you pronounce it" to get it over with?

Sorenson: Yes, whatever way that person is saying it is the right way. Say-ocean, sow-sin, say-OH-sin. The music's the same.

Q: If you would, take us through a typical "day in the life" on the Warped Tour.

Sorenson: The schedule is not set in stone, so we find out what time we play, then plan our days around that. Everyone on the tour this year are friends. So it's going to be great. We have bikes on tour, and we will be cruising around. Working on our tans. I'm also planning on writing a cookbook for the "touring musician."

Q: You've played Dallas multiple times – any memories from those stops?

Sorenson: Yes, the greatest tacos in the world – Fuel City tacos, which I think is off 35 somewhere.

Q: Do you get any time to soak in the culture of each stop?

Sorenson: Sometimes. Outside of the country, we try and do as much "local" stuff as possible. In Indonesia, we drank cobra's blood.

Q: You'll likely face brutal, 100-plus-degree heat here in Texas. What's it like performing in that kind of temperature, and what's your advice for the crowd enduring it?

Sorenson: Water and minimal clothing. I mean, we're going to be in it, all day, every day. So we might be used to it. There's a point you reach in feeling miserable where you just can't go any lower.

Q: The band is posting updates on Twitter, including its set times on Warped. What's the good and the bad about our Twitter obsessions?

Sorenson: I think knowing what people are doing at all times is pretty dumb. It's like, mundane. And what's worse, it's posting about it. "Driving down the freeway, God I hate traffic" posts. It's like, come on. I think it gives people a sense that little problems are important. And gives people an excuse to have more problems. But a bakery tweeting "fresh doughnuts" – now that is wise.

Q: Have to ask, since this is the home of the Texas Rangers – do you ever refer to your drummer as A-Rod?

Sorenson: My roommate is C.J. Wilson of the Texas Rangers! And Alex signs as "A-Rod" sometimes.

Q: Wow. C.J.'s one of the more "eccentric" Rangers. What's he like as a roomie?

Sorenson: Even more weird. He's got no lights in his room. He shares a common desire for exotic, borderline-disgusting foods with yours truly. And I've walked in on him pretending he is DJing for a crowd of 50,000. Arm-waving and everything. I love the guy.

DETAILS: Vans Warped Tour. Sunday at 11 a.m. at Superpages.com Center, 1818 First Ave., Fair Park. $35. 1-800-745-3000 or ticketmaster.com.
