This week's local-music picks: Spooky Folk, Dovetail

12:00 AM CDT on Thursday, October 22, 2009

Branton Elerbee

Spooky Folk

This five-piece group led by Kaleo Kaualoku has built a loyal following in Denton, its hometown. So expect the crowd at Dan's to welcome Spooky Folk's stark, traditional tunes with open arms. With Jenn Gooch and Matthew Gray.

Details: Thursday at 10 p.m. at Dan's Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St., Denton. $5. 940-320-2000. danssilverleaf.com.

Scary Cherry

and the Bang Bangs

Lezlie Deane (left) capably fronts this local girl-centric power-pop band. She has a badass '80s rock vocal style, and there's no doubt she'll offer opening acts Spector 45 and Hormones some tips on stage presence.

Details: Thursday at 10 p.m. at the Cavern, 1914 Greenville Ave. $8. 214-828-1914. thecaverndallas.com.

Dovetail

Dovetail's new CD, Love Is War, sounds different than many of the other rock projects recorded at Salim Nourallah's Pleasantry Lane studios. Think polished, Britpop-influenced songs with pretty falsettos (from frontman Philip Creamer.) A nice change for the Lane.

Details: With Odis, the Wandas and Ryan Edgar, Friday at 8 p.m. at Trees, 2709 Elm St. $10. 214-741-1122. treesdallas.com.

Maleveller

This metal foursome from Dallas features awe-inspiring dual guitars and menacingly low vocals. The guys are still plugging away on their first album. We're praying it gets released on vinyl. With Inside Light, Tonight Tonight, Here Holy Spain and the Phuss.

Details: Friday at 8:30 p.m. at Curtain Club, 2800 Main St. Cover TBA. 214-742-6207. curtainclub.com.

Old Snack

After losing Will Kapinos to a solo career, Make-Believers members Aaron White, Justin Collins and Chris Garver decided to keep making lo-fi rock with a new name and a sped-up tempo. Says White in an e-mail: "The remaining three members decided to keep going to see how fast we could play, with the only sustenance being coffee, beer and fine Plano pastries."

Details: Wednesday at 9 p.m. at the Cavern, 1914 Greenville Ave. $6. 214-828-1914. thecaverndallas.com.
