This week's local-music picks: Creede Williams, Hormones

12:00 AM CDT on Thursday, October 8, 2009

Creede Williams

The East Dallas singer-songwriter will put on a special outdoor show to celebrate the recent release of his After the Letters CD, which was produced by Cary Pierce. Williams tells us he'll be accompanied by a backing band including members of Shibboleth and Chomsky. With opening act Becky Middleton.

Details: Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at the Belmont Hotel, 901 Fort Worth Ave. $15. 214-393-2300. swankpresents.com.

Yeahdef's hip-hop series

Denton DJ Yeahdef has been branching out from his popular '90s night lately. The latest is this hip-hop showcase featuring local acts Xegesis, Vortexas, the Neighborhood All-Stars, Picnictyme, Stabalances and CS Rucker. Sounds like a lot of fun for just five bucks.

Details: Friday at 10 p.m. at Rubber Gloves, 411 E. Sycamore St., Denton. $5. 940-387-7781. rubberglovesdentontx.com.

Oktoberfest at Barley House

Oh, yeah, that's why we love the fall: There's always a celebration including beer and brats around the corner. And Barley House's is right up the local-music-lover's alley, with scheduled performances by Taylor Davis, the Deathray Davies, the Burning Hotels, Pepper Theft and more.

Details: Saturday at noon at Barley House,

5612 SMU Blvd. Free. 214-824-0306. barleyhouse.com.

Riverboat Gamblers, Spector 45

The Double Wide's the perfect place for two wild and out-of-control bands to do their thing. The Gamblers (above) are the older, more traveled ones here, having built a national fan base on the strength of their melodic pop-punk tunes. Spector 45's been holding it down locally for years with a rebellious punkabilly sound.

Also with the Von Ehrics.

Details: Sunday at 10 p.m. at Double Wide,

3510 Commerce St. Cover TBA. 214-887-6510. double-wide.com.

Hormones

We're intrigued by this new Dallas duo made up of bassist Michael Beard (left) and drummer/singer Jordan Williams. The song streaming on the guys' MySpace page at the moment (myspace.com/hormones2), "Chewing Time," is one sassy little rock gem. But there'll be at least five more new tunes unveiled at the EP-release show.

Details: With a DJ set by Wild in the Streets, Wednesday at 9 p.m. at the Cavern,

1914 Greenville Ave. $6. 214-828-1914. thecaverndallas.com.
