Liner Notes: New DJ nights, Moving Atlas EP release

10:08 AM CDT on Thursday, October 1, 2009

By Hunter Hauk

DJs are a vital part of the Dallas music scene, often pulling in crowds more consistently than live bands. So we're betting on success for a couple of new DJ nights debuting at Lower Greenville haunt the Cavern.

Schwa, the Big DJ winner at Quick's Big Thing, is teaming with James Genova for a regular Friday night disco-house-electro party dubbed "Schwassanova: Amiamo la Discoteca." Schwa writes in an e-mail, "We're really excited about the night because we feel there are so many DJs in town trying to throw 'dance parties,' but no one's really doing it proper."

For those who need to blow off some midweek steam, Good Records manager Chris Penn will be reviving his DJ alter-ego CeePee for a Wednesday night gig at the Cavern starting next week.

Penn tells us his weekly set "will be like a mobile Good Records whetting your appetite for music."

New music alert

Moving Atlas gets a little help from its friends in the Dallas hard-rock scene on the new Red Shelter EP, which will be released at a Friday night headlining gig at Trees. Joining singer Dunagin Gaines (right) and company on the EP are Fair to Midland's Andrew Sudderth, Neverset's Shawn Hamm and former Feds member Jason Jones. Moving Atlas last rocked the Trees stage in front of a large crowd during the venue's re- opening weekend, so we wouldn't be surprised if the house is packed with returning customers on Friday. • Visit the blog on Friday to find out how Denton acts Andrew Tinker and Erin Austin fared in the Sound and the Jury battle of the bands competition. The winner will get a main-stage spot at this weekend's Austin City Limits Music Festival. Locals Sarah Jaffe, the Toadies and Jonathan Tyler & the Northern Lights were already on the festival schedule. Find it at aclfest.com.

• As you know, Bowling for Soup will release its new album Sorry For Partyin' on Oct. 13. Fans with disposable incomes can go ahead and pre-order a $1,000 "Bachelor Party" edition, which includes a CD, a calendar and a personalized song written and recorded by the band. Pretty cool if you can afford it. But if you can't, you could always just change your first name to "Wena." Find out more at bowlingforsoup.tv.
