Congratulations Denton singer-songwriters
Andrew Tinker and
Erin Austin landed in the final five for the Dell Sound and the Jury competition, putting them one step closer to a main-stage slot at the upcoming Austin City Limits Music Festival. Tinker and Austin advance to a live battle-of-the-bands round; they'll play for the big prize on Wednesday at Antone's in Austin. The winner at that event will go on to play the ACL festival and win cash and prizes. Find out more at delllounge.com/soundandthejury.
New music alert
• Dallas psych-rock band
Binary Sunrise has a high-profile supporter in the Polyphonic Spree's
Tim DeLaughter. DeLaughter writes of the band on Good Records' Web site, "When I was sonically introduced to Binary Sunrise, I immediately felt that sense of excitement, as if I was entering a familiar yet undiscovered path, leading to a musical shangri-la playground." So, it's no surprise that Binary's new self-titled album is coming out on Good Records' indie label. Find out why DeLaughter is so excited at one of the upcoming CD-release shows, Friday at Lola's Fort Worth and Saturday at City Tavern. myspace.com/binarysunrise.
• Austin singer-songwriter Bob Schneider plays in Dallas so much that he probably considers it his second home. He even found a local label (Kirtland Records) to release his new album, Lovely Creatures. It comes out next week, but Schneider takes the stage at the Granada on Thursday night to celebrate it. Pressing the Flesh
Booking agent
John Iskander has been hitting the promotions hard for his upcoming lineup of shows. At his Web site, paradeofflesh.com, he streams music from the touring acts he's bringing in, and gives away their CDs and tickets to the shows. Not that he needs to do much – his bills are among the more interesting and diverse you'll find at the smaller venues, and he always tries to mix his favorite local acts in with the touring attractions. His next two shows are at the Lounge on Elm St.: Garage act
Experimental Dental School on Thursday and progressive rockers
Birds of Avalon on Saturday.
