DJ NATURE | HEY DJ

It's definitely refreshing to listen to a DJ who doesn't feel pressured to sandwich in that radio cut that will keep the dance floor alive. When it's simply about digging through the stacks and playing great tunes, the musical menu can be tasty.

Sista Whitenoise's new night at the Lounge on Elm Street is that kind of affair. From Funkadelic and Breakestra, to classic Wu-Tang and local indie-rock acts, the night is about sampling new sounds and enjoying the forgotten ones.

We e-mailed with Sista Whitenoise earlier this week about her return to Deep Ellum and her KNON-FM radio show. Here's how it went down.Q: Your radio show, 'The Sonic Assembly Power Hour' has been on the air at

KNON for about six months now.

Tell us about it.

Sista Whitenoise: I've been a supporter of KNON and been friends with [program director] Dave Chaos for years. I've done volunteer work which includes voiceovers and the occasional ... odd job. But really have to thank my boyfriend, EZ Eddie D, because had it not been for hanging around his show or other events with him, I might not have been as fresh in Dave's mind when it came to looking for a new show. Reid Robinson and I co-host the show Tuesdays from 10 p.m. to midnight. It is a program catering to audiophiles, and does not focus on any specific genre or era. You may hear a song from local act Giggle Party one minute, Gil Scott-Heron the next, followed by Iggy Pop's newest track. It may sound a little disjointed in theory, but it works and we're getting good feedback.

Q: You've had some pretty amazing guests on the show. Who were some of the most memorable for you and what did you enjoy about their participation?

Sista Whitenoise: A few of our guests so far include Hunter Hauk, Pete Freedman, Chelsea Callahan, Assassination City derby girls and Dallas City Council member Angela Hunt. While some guests work in the music industry, we also like to peruse the minds and iPods of people you wouldn't normally think of as a "go-to" source for expanding your musical horizons. Kinky Friedman has agreed to be a guest, and I'm looking forward to that immensely. No politics, though. Strictly music!

Q: Your father was actually a radio jock. What was it like growing up around a DJ?

Sista Whitenoise: My dad was a big-band radio DJ in the '40s and '50s and had an intense love for Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Waller and Benny Goodman. When I was growing up, we had a Saturday ritual of going to the mall and each of us getting a new record. It was so fun and definitely cemented my habit as a music junkie.

Q: You've got a new night at the Lounge on Elm Street. What should we know about that?

Sista Whitenoise: First off, I want to thank the owners, Glen Jackson and Albert Magallon for giving hip-hop a home. Their support of local and touring hip-hop acts is amazing for Dallas. I am spinning there on Wednesdays from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. There are great drink specials and no cover, and I play my usual all-over-the-map set. You can expect an eclectic mix of hip-hop, punk, rock 'n' roll and juke-joint.

The lowdown
