Favorite things: John Pedigo of Boys Named Sue

Idol Records

No one would accuse the Boys Named Sue of taking themselves too seriously. The Dallas band's new Idol Records album The Hits, Vol. Sue! boasts comedic country tracks such as "Light Beers Away," "You Got Barred" and "You Just Got Sued!"

But the guys' dedication to the traditional sounds of their genre – from Robert Stave's adept fiddling to singer John Pedigo's authentic twang – keeps the band from becoming an unintentional joke.

In advance of the Boys' CD-release party this weekend at Sons of Hermann, we asked Pedigo to make a few personal best-of lists. Read on.

Favorite drinking songs

"Every country song is a drinking song – good or bad. One of my favorite albums to drink to is Bob Keen's Live #2. Driving through East Texas and listening to that while gripping a koozer that's stuffed with a blue can filled with ice cold giggle water makes me very, very, very, very, very, very happy. Although, the top of my list is Kris Kristofferson's 'Sunday Morning Coming Down.' Honorable mention: Lefty's 'Shine, Shave, Shower.' Lefty sings about how it's Saturday, therefore he's actually going to clean himself to go out and party. Does this dude like to party or what? Oh, wait ... the best drinking song EVER is 'Fist of Country' on the new Sue album. Doy."

Favorite cheating songs

"Although it isn't a cheating song, for some reason this line from 'Shake, Rattle and Roll' comes to mind: 'I'm like a one-eyed cat peepin' in a seafood store. I take one look at you and see you ain't no child no more.' That's probably my favorite line from any song ever. Absolute genius. Although, the greatest cheatin'/drinking song is no doubt Gary Stewart's legendary 'She's Acting Single, I'm Drinking Double.' Of course, Snakebite Sue's 'Dollar at a Time' and Bobby Sue's 'Remember You' are prime candidates."

Three least favorite country artists

"Ding Dong Doozer and the Willy Billy Trio, Dilfred Don Gubby, and Bold Bramsey Barnacle and the Shifty Six Shooters. These guys are awful."

Favorite country music-themed movie

"Without a question, Smokey and the Bandit. A couple of friends frequently say this: 'There's a fundamental issue with nearly every movie made – no Smokey, no Bandit.' I agree. Although Pure Country and 8 Seconds are pretty much made on golden film."

Three favorite beers

"Giggle water is so tasty. However, after 10 samples, does it even matter anymore? If I had to rate it, it would go something like this:

1. Giggle water

2. Giggle water light

3. Giggle water Oktoberfest."

Three favorite places

to drink in Dallas

"No-brainers: Libertine, Landing and Sons of Hermann Hall."

Three favorite bar foods

"FRESH jalapeños soaked with a ton of lime is my favorite. Also, straight-up bacon. Nothing else needed. I hear that the fair is going to have fried butter balls this year. That may top the list. A really fun thing to do when at a late-night eatery is to buy the entire restaurant a slice of bacon. This works everywhere except Cafe Brazil, where they fear that the meat will offend someone. Totally outrageous, right?"

Something that annoys me

about each of my bandmates

"I couldn't say that the other guys are annoying. C'mon. That's not nice. However, generally, Dub's always acting Dub-like, Bobby's always smiling and sawin' on his fiddle stick, and Snakebite is always speaking over me."Boys Named Sue
