Do you enjoy animated adventures chock full of seizure-inducing action sequences, incomprehensible plot lines, mind-boggling dialogue and gravity-defying Technicolor hairstyles? You do? Well, then you've probably already secured tickets to AnimeFest 2009.
Guests of honor at this year's event include artists Shinji Kimura (Batman: Gotham Knight, Akira) and Junichi Taniguchi (Princess Mononoke, Ghost in the Shell: Innocence, Dragon Ball Z), screenwriter Dai Sato (Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Samurai Champloo) and nearly every American actor who has ever contributed voicework to Shin Chan.
Anime-centric musical performances will be provided by hip-hop producer/DJ Tsutchie, California rock outfit Eyeshine and violin-and-cello sister act Ramen and Rice.
It's gonna be more fun than a gigantic lactating space squid wearing a schoolgirl uniform!

'These Aren't the Droids You're Looking For' In perhaps the greatest thing to happen to the Star Wars franchise since slave Leia donned an iron bikini, Oak Cliff roommates Soda Gallery and Boomstick Comics have joined forces to present a show that is equal parts fan appreciation and art exhibition.
"These Aren't the Droids You're Looking For" features Star Wars tribute art from various national artists, as well as local Jedi master Jonathon Kimbrell of Telephone Print Company. The Soda Gallery's summer series of pop art collides into Boomstick's feral Star Wars fandom harder than one of the Death Star's turbo-laser turrets taking out Jek Porkins' X-Wing fighter. (Wookieepedia it.)
Details: Exhibit continues through Sept. 14. Open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Boomstick Comic Shop/The Soda Gallery, 408 N. Bishop Ave., Suite 101. Free. 214-946-7632. boomstickcomics.com. thesodagallery.com.
Pirate Day Look, I'm a nerd of pretty extreme proportions. But even I don't understand people's fascination with pirates. First of all, pirates were criminals. They probably smelled like sun-soaked kelp and rotted fish. And their grammar was atrocious.
Well, none of this stopped some nerd somewhere from designating Sept. 19 as International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Incidentally, this holiday coincides with a similar day of observance, International Make Fun of People Who Are Talking Like a Pirate Day.
Nonetheless, Lone Star Comics' Arlington location will be celebrating with pirate-themed festivities and lots of people in tattered clothing saying "Arrr" and calling each other "matey."
While I jest, pirate-speak did provide the Beastie Boys with this choice sample. "Professor, what's another word for pirate treasure? Well, I think it's booty. Booty. Wrr-wicca-wrr. Booty."
Details: Pirate Day is Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Lone Star Comics, 1215 S. Cooper St., Arlington. Free. 817-265-0491. mycomicshop.com.
So long, personal human interaction! This month is absolutely infected with highly anticipated vid'ya game releases. You've got Guitar Hero 5, The Beatles: Rock Band, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2, Need for Speed: Shift, and Halo 3: ODST, just to name a few.
How am I supposed to put a dent in Batman: Arkham Asylum when I'm too busy looking forward to rocking the ever-loving shiz out of "Helter Skelter" on expert level? These video game publishers need to space this stuff out. You'd think Christmas was a few months away or something.
Details: None. I just needed to write something about these games to justify expensing them to Quick.
