The founders of local movie Web site Gordon and the Whale discuss their latest cinematic obsessions.
I was in a daze walking out of the screening for THE FOURTH KIND, arguing with myself about the accuracy of the film's claims regarding real audio and video footage. The movie inserts supposedly true video and audio that correspond with the events the cast is acting out. My rational side kept saying, "It is a trick, they are misleading you." So I researched the events to find out what is actually real about the film, and by "researched," I mean "spent 10 minutes Googling." To avoid any possible spoilers, I will not say what I found. But I think it's something you need to do after you see the film ... and you should definitely see it. I can't imagine why one of the scariest films I've seen is being released this Friday, six days after Halloween. But it's a well-crafted sci-fi horror flick, and it's our new-release pick of the week.Ten years ago, we were given what would eventually become a cult hit, THE BOONDOCK SAINTS. I remember renting this (on VHS) every time my mom and I went to Blockbuster. I loved the way it was shot, and just like everyone else, I was reminded of Quentin Tarantino. As I got older, I wondered why there was no sequel. The answer to that question can be found in the 2003 documentary OVERNIGHT, about the rise and fall of Boondock Saints writer/director Troy Duffy. To give you the short version, his hot temper got in the way of any progress. But it looks like fate has finally given Duffy (and Saints fans) another chance, as THE BOONDOCK SAINTS II: ALL SAINTS DAY hit theaters last week in select cities. Thing is, Dallas ain't one of those cities. I know you're thinking, "Why the hell are you wasting my time, then?" Well, if all of us fans band together, we can bring the sequel to Dallas. Remember when we had to "demand" Paranormal Activity to play here? The people behind All Saints Day are encouraging the same thing. Go to Eventful.com, search "Boondock Saints," head to the event page, and hit "Demand It!" It'll ask for your ZIP code, and as long as it's in the Dallas area, it'll count. Let's do this!Submit questions, comments and hell-yeahs to letters@quickdfw.com. Find reviews, news and more at gordonandthewhale.com.
